More Light Than Heat

"These blazes, daughter,
Giving more light than heat, extinct in both
Even in their promise as it is a-making,
You must not take for fire."

I worry about this- both about giving more light than heat, and about mistaking blazes for fires. I'm working on it.

So, I noticed a funny thing while on the Tour de Nerdfighting. Not only was the biggest cheer of the night for the part where I stuck “Benedict Cumberbatch” into Book 8, but pretty much everyone had seen season two of Sherlock.

Don’t get me wrong, I had also seen season two (or should I…

I think it’s less about work/exclusivity than about immediate gratification. I have friends who have no involvement in any online communities/fandoms who stream the shows because, having seen the first season on netflix and been left with a cliff hanger, they want to watch the rest now rather than six months from now. Although admittedly I don’t know anyone who’s spent days trying to acquire the episodes, everyone’s just streamed them from the bbc site, so maybe you’re talking about a different phenomenon.

As lots of you know, I’m taking a children’s lit module this term, which means I’m reading about three kids’ books a week. They’re great and this week was boy adventure novels week so our set reading included the surprisingly immersive Brendon Chase by B.B. and the 150 page story Hatchet by…

I probably read Hatchet fifteen times between the ages of seven and nine. I remember thinking that Brian was so old, such a big kid- it’s messing with my head to think about how different your reading experience must have been. I think the whole book would feel darker to me now, reading about someone half my age going through that. At the time it was all fun and adventure, and then playing in the woods after school wishing I could have that kind of adventure. Also it made me very much want to take my hatchet with me whenever I traveled.

Moss graffiti - mix yogurt, water and live moss in a blender, then paint onto a wall. Moss will grow in the shape of whatever you painted. Just remember to spritz it with water every once in a while to keep it alive.

I want to do this.

I am trying this thing where instead of just watching other people put things on the internet, I put some things on the internet too. Not sure how it’s going to go.
